Unpaid internships help open doors for college students.? They’re a great way to make new contacts, gain a mentor, get valuable work experience for your resume, etc.? The downside is obvious – NO PAY. Not many college students can afford to work for free – particularly not working class and/or first generation college students.? It’s great to see that AL-07 Congresswoman Terri Sewell is participating in the effort to offer paid internships to college students from her district.

The 7th?Project announced today the opening of the application process for the 2019 Congressional Internship Program. The Congressional Internship Program gives college students who are residents of Alabama’s 7th?District with high academic achievement and demonstrated financial need the opportunity to participate in a four-week Congressional internship in the Washington, D.C. office of Congresswoman Terri Sewell.?
?The 7th?Project provides housing on a college campus in Washington, D.C. and a weekly stipend during the internship.? Internships in District offices are available as well. The Congressional internship program has proven to be a monumental success having provided scholarships to more than 30 students since 2014.? Program alumni have gone on to start careers on Capitol Hill and work with organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center, the NAACP, Human Rights Campaign, and Teach for America.? These students are making powerful investments in their munities and across the 7thDistrict.
Interested students should visit?www.The7thProject.?for more information and to apply for the Congressional Internship Program.??Any undergraduate student currently enrolled in college with a 3.0 GPA or higher who is a resident of Alabama’s 7th Congressional District?is eligible to apply for the Congressional Internship Program. Students may attend an accredited college or university located anywhere, but the college student must be from Alabama’s 7th Congressional District.??Applications may be pleted online and must be received by April 8, 2019.
“We found that many students from Alabama’s 7th?District weren’t able to take advantage of the Washington internship opportunity because of economic barriers,” stated Ted Hosp, Board Chairman of The 7th?Project. “We felt it was important to step in and fill the gap.? Internships open so many doors for young people, and it is our hope that these students will continue to bring the knowledge and experience they gain back to their munities and make a positive impact in the 7th?Congressional District.”
